Bayes Contracting,
A Legacy in Transportation
In 1972, The Bayes Family embarked on their transport journey when David and Joan Bayes acquired a quarry on the Family farm, our present location, and their first truck, a TS3 Commer. This marked the inception of Bayes Brothers Transport. Specialising in the transportation of materials such as metal, scoria, limestone fill, excavation materials, and agricultural lime, the business flourished. The trucking fleet expanded to include an Arco V8 International and a KH Bedford with a short 2 axel trailer, servicing routes from Dairy flat to the Coromandel and Hauraki Plains.
As demand increased, the fleet grew in 1976 with the acquisition of an Isuzu VPZ 6-wheeler with a 2-axel trailer. In 1979, Robert’s Transport, a local bus company, approached David and Joan to purchase the bus company. The sale was finalised on a September Saturday, allowing only two days to organise drivers and licenses before commencing four local school runs that Monday morning. Thus, Bayes Coachlines was born. By 2009, the fleet boasted 49 school buses, serving local and north shore schools, complemented by 5 top line touring coaches, conducting tours across both the North and South Islands.
In 2009, David and Joan’s sons, John, and Richard, assumed running of the company, overseeing its expansion into a prominent player in the industry. By 2023, fuelled by a passion for trucks, the brothers diversified the business, returning to their family’s roots in transport, by purchasing a Scania Truck, marking the inception of Bayes Contracting. The company’s growth accelerated as relationships with clients and business partners were forged, resulting in the acquisition of additional equipment including a Cat digger, roller and two new Scania Trucks.
The “Bayes” name has been synonymous within the area for generations, starting in Red Beach and continuing its legacy in the transport of local goods and people.
